Attorney General Bill Schuette’s cease-and-desist letters aimed at Internet sweepstakes cafes are the result of poor gambling policies in Michigan. The cafes commit neither harm to the communities where they are located nor fraud to their customers. It seems that the only wrong they have committed is competing with state-favored gambling, such as licensed casinos or the lottery.
Schuette has been entrusted by taxpayers of Michigan to make the best use of his resources while upholding the laws of the state. The Legislature should revise the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act to allow for Internet sweepstakes cafes. The AG should not be worrying about these cafes in order to focus on more effective ways to do his job.
