Forvik Update

–Lauren M. Ruhland, MCPP intern

Remember Forvik, the secessionist Shetland island?  Her Declaration of Independence from the British government is online now.  It looks awfully familiar, though I wish Stuart hadn’t killed the lovely alliteration of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for “life, freedom, and the expression of their full potential.”

  1. I agree that “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” is much more poetic. However, I know several people who are simply confused by the word ‘Liberty’. They understand ‘freedom’ pretty well and even the distinctly American meanings the word can carry, but, for some reason, the word ‘Liberty’ throws them for a loop. They simply don’t understand it to be the same thing as freedom. ‘Liberty’, as a word, is just not part of many people’s vernacular vocabulary, so maybe ‘freedom’ was a better choice for the Forvik declaration.

That is not to say, though, that we shouldn’t be educating people so that both words can be used freely and comfortably. We just are not there right now, is all.

  2. GOOD ON YOU STUART
    YOU SHOW THE GOVERNMENT.
GO FOR IT AND BE PROUD OF WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
    GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE
